PE Premium
Please read the information below which gives details of our PE and Sport Premium Grant and how we allocate the funding.
What is the Sport Premium?
In 2013 the Government showed their commitment to Physical Education by announcing the allocation of the sports premium funding. This funding was jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and saw money going directly into primary schools to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children. The initiative behind this funding has always been to ensure that schools can make improvements which are both sustainable and also provide children with opportunities to develop a lifetime commitment to be healthy and active. This funding has continued and this academic year we have received £16101.
The funding must only be used for school sports and physical education.
Purpose of funding
Schools will have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.
Possible uses for the funding include:
- hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work alongside primary teachers when teaching PE
- new or additional Change4Life sport clubs
- paying for professional development opportunities in PE/sport
- providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE/sport
- running sport competitions, or increasing participation in the school games
- buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE/sport
- providing places for pupils on after school sport clubs and holiday clubs.
Sports Premium at St Joseph's 2022-2023
The start of this new academic year brings new opportunities into school sport and PE. As always, the main focus of our PE spending is to ensure that staff have the relevent subject knowledge and resources to ensure that each child is receiving two hours of high quality Physical Education every week.
After reviewing the current provision from previous academic years, our main focus areas for using this years PE premium are as follows:
- Staff CPD
- Swimming. Lowering the year groups from year 2 & 3 to 1 & 2 to ensure children are learning to swim as soon as possible. Additional water safety lessons for years 5 & 6 and catch up swimming sessions in KS2.
- Promoting physical activity and creating physically literate pupils in EYFS & KS1 through the development of the outdoor classroom and provision.
- Using physical activity to promote mental health and well-being of all children and their families.
- Promoting healthy eating and lifestyle choices
- Providing a broad range of sporting and physically active opportunities to capture the interest and engagement of all children.
- Giving children the opportunity to represent the school in both competitive and non competitive sporting events.
- Continue to find ways to engage our least active pupils in physical activity.
Head over to the Physical Education page on our website to look in more detail about the sporting and physical activity opportunities we provide to our pupils here at St Joseph's.
The Premium is being used to meet the 5 main aims of the funding:
- the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – kickstarting healthy active lifestyles
- the profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement
- increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
- broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
- increased participation in competitive sport
The school aims to ensure sustainability of the activities and high level PE lessons through investing in staff training, including support staff, and the positive ethos created in school regarding sport and exercise. Here at St Joseph's, we are keen to ensure the positive impact of the Sport Premium funding continues to benefit the pupils of the school both now and in the future.
